Manchester United Successfully Appeal Bruno Fernandes' Red Card Against Tottenham

Manchester United have won their appeal against the red card shown to Bruno Fernandes during the team’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The United captain was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh for a challenge on James Maddison in the first half of the match.

The incident occurred when Fernandes appeared to slip while closing down Maddison, throwing out a leg and catching the Spurs midfielder in the process. Kavanagh showed Fernandes a straight red card, and the decision was initially supported by VAR John Brooks.

However, United lodged an appeal on Monday, and the Football Association (FA) confirmed on Tuesday that they have overturned the decision. As a result, Fernandes will avoid a suspension and will be available for United’s next three Premier League games against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham.

The FA’s statement read: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.”

United manager Erik ten Hag had expressed his belief that the red card “changed the game” against Tottenham, despite the visitors dominating the match even before Fernandes’ dismissal. The Portuguese midfielder himself was incensed by the decision, claiming that Maddison had admitted it wasn’t a sending-off.

“I think in the eyes of everyone, you can see that is never a red card, because if this is a red card I think we have to look at many other incidents,” Fernandes said. “I had many incidents when I get kicked and everything, and I’ve never seen something so quick coming off as a red card. I just think it’s never a red card.”

The successful appeal will come as a relief to Manchester United, as they look to bounce back from the disappointing defeat and maintain their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League. With Fernandes available for the upcoming crucial fixtures, the Red Devils will hope to regain their form and secure positive results in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
