Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has reaffirmed his belief in the squad’s commitment to his attacking philosophy, despite suffering a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday. The loss marked Spurs’ seventh league defeat of the season, leaving them 11th in the Premier League table and seven points adrift of the top four.

Postecoglou, who took charge at Tottenham in the summer of 2023, guided the team to a fifth-place finish in his first season. However, the current campaign has been marred by a series of injury setbacks and inconsistent performances. Despite the challenges, the Australian manager remains confident in his approach.

“It is a tough moment because there are all these tools you can possibly use as a manager when you are going through tough moments to turn things around and our limited resources from a playing perspective at the moment doesn’t allow us to do that so you have to find other ways,” Postecoglou told a news conference. “It’s not through a lack of effort. The players are constantly out there because we can’t rotate. They are giving everything they can. It diminishes performances as well because they probably need a rest but we can’t give them a rest.”

The 59-year-old manager added, “I think it is something we need to tackle head on and keep pushing on. There is still plenty to play for us between now and January just to make sure we keep performing. I still sense within this squad there is a real conviction in what we are doing and if we maintain that we will turn our season around and hopefully at some point we hit some smoother waters in terms of some of the things that are happening at the moment.”

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, who has played under five managers since arriving at the club in 2021, has backed Postecoglou, despite the team’s recent struggles. “He’s a great coach. We saw it in the first season. In this second one we’ve suffered a lot of injuries,” Romero told Telemundo. “Players are the first one to be criticised, then if we lose 10 games, the staff can be changed, but nobody talks about what is actually happening. We are very happy with this staff, me and my colleagues. We love how they work and the football they try to play. We’ll try to move on quickly.”

Postecoglou, known for his attacking philosophy, has won trophies with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F Marinos, Celtic, and the Australia national team. He remains steadfast in his approach, despite the pressure mounting on his position.

“It was good enough to get us ahead in the game so I am not sure why we should change our approach,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It was a game of big moments. If we score at 2-2 and go 3-2 ahead then the pressure is on them and they have to open up like we did when we conceded. Their penalties were poor from our behalf. We didn’t need to make those challenges and it was hard for us to claw it back.”

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min, who scored a late consolation goal in the defeat to Chelsea, has called on his teammates to step up and support the manager. “We’ve got to stick together in such difficult moments,” the 32-year-old South Korean told Sky Sports. “It’s very important and it’s why we need big support. The players are very young and they need support more than before and more than we had. The fans were always supporting amazingly but I think it’s time the players also need to step up. We need some big support and big cheering up.”

As Tottenham look to turn their season around, Postecoglou and his squad will need to find a way to overcome their injury woes and rediscover the form that saw them impress in his first season at the helm. With crucial matches against Southampton, Manchester United, and Liverpool on the horizon, the coming weeks will be pivotal in determining the direction of Tottenham’s campaign.
