Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold found himself at the center of criticism following his team’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday. The 26-year-old, whose contract runs out in June, struggled defensively throughout the match, prompting former United captain Roy Keane to question his ability to play for a top club like Real Madrid.

Speaking on Sky Sports at halftime, Keane fired a warning shot at Alexander-Arnold, saying, “We talk about how brilliant Trent is going forward, but Trent’s defending today, my goodness, it’s like schoolboy stuff. They talk about him going to Real Madrid, the way he’s defending, he’s going to Tranmere Rovers after this, he’s got to do better.”

Alexander-Arnold’s defensive frailties were exposed in the 52nd minute when United took a 1-0 lead at Anfield. Lisandro Martínez breezed past the right-back to fire a shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, highlighting the ongoing concerns about Alexander-Arnold’s ability to defend against top-quality opponents.

Despite Liverpool equalizing through Cody Gakpo and taking the lead thanks to a penalty from Mohamed Salah, United drew level in the 80th minute through Amad, leaving both sides to settle for a point each. Alexander-Arnold was replaced by Conor Bradley in the 86th minute, further emphasizing his struggles on the day.

The criticism of Alexander-Arnold’s performance was not limited to Roy Keane. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said the match could not have gone worse for the right-back, while Keane believed he should have been substituted earlier. However, ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge put the display down to “just one of those games,” and Premier League winner Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live, “Where has this pile-on for Trent come from? Trent has been brilliant in a Liverpool jersey and all of a sudden, you want him out the door. Blimey.”

The speculation surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future has intensified in recent months, with reports suggesting that Real Madrid had made an offer to sign him in the January transfer window, which Liverpool rejected. The 26-year-old’s contract situation, along with those of teammates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, has added to the uncertainty surrounding the club.

A source told ESPN last month that Liverpool had rejected Madrid’s offer, but the ongoing speculation has led to suggestions that Alexander-Arnold may have been “unnerved” by the situation. The right-back has remained tight-lipped on his future, leaving fans and pundits to speculate about his next move.
