Plymouth Argyle, currently bottom of the Championship, have been drawn against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup following their remarkable 1-0 victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday. Ryan Hardie’s 53rd-minute penalty secured the upset at Home Park, handing Liverpool only their fourth defeat of the season and ending their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.

The fifth round draw, which took place on Monday, also pitted defending champions Manchester United against Fulham, while Aston Villa will host Cardiff City. In a London derby, Crystal Palace will face Millwall, and Carabao Cup finalists Newcastle United will play Brighton, who eliminated Chelsea on Saturday.

The clash between Preston North End and Burnley ensures that at least one Championship side will progress to the quarterfinal stage of the competition.

Other notable fixtures include Bournemouth against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Exeter City or Nottingham Forest hosting Ipswich Town.

The fifth round ties are scheduled to be played across the weekend of March 1-2, with the FA Cup final set to take place at Wembley Stadium on May 18.

FA Cup fifth round draw:

  • Preston North End vs. Burnley
  • Aston Villa vs. Cardiff City
  • Crystal Palace vs. Millwall
  • Manchester United vs. Fulham
  • Newcastle United vs. Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Bournemouth vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers
  • Manchester City vs. Plymouth Argyle
  • Exeter City or Nottingham Forest vs. Ipswich Town

Plymouth Argyle’s historic victory over Liverpool has been hailed as one of the biggest upsets in recent FA Cup history, with the Championship strugglers now set to face another daunting task against Pep Guardiola’s star-studded Manchester City side. The Pilgrims will be hoping to continue their giant-killing run and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the competition.

Meanwhile, the draw has set up several intriguing matchups between Premier League sides, with Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Brighton all facing fellow top-flight opposition. The fifth round promises to deliver more excitement and potential upsets as clubs battle it out for a place in the latter stages of the FA Cup.
