Ange Postecoglou Sacked by Tottenham Hotspur Just 16 Days After Europa League Glory

  • Postecoglou led Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.
  • Despite European success, Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League, their worst season, losing 22 of 38 matches.
  • Potential replacements include Thomas Frank, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, and Mauricio Pochettino.

Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed from his role as Tottenham Hotspur manager, just 16 days after guiding the club to victory in the Europa League final. The decision comes exactly two years after the Australian was appointed on a four-year contract, following his successful stint at Celtic.

Postecoglou’s tenure at Spurs was marked by contrasting fortunes. While he delivered the club’s first major trophy in nearly two decades with a 1-0 triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao, Tottenham endured their worst Premier League season, finishing 17th after suffering 22 defeats in 38 matches.

Spurs said in a statement Postecoglou would be remembered for delivering “one of the club’s greatest moments” in becoming only the third manager to win them a European trophy. But they added they could not base their decision on “emotions aligned to this triumph” and felt a change was necessary.

At a victory parade celebrating their European success, Postecoglou had hinted at a brighter future, telling fans, “season three is better than season two.” However, the club’s hierarchy has decided to part ways with the 59-year-old, citing a “review of performances” as the basis for their decision.

In a statement, Postecoglou acknowledged his time at the club, stating, “The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.”

Despite the unceremonious end to his time in north London, Postecoglou’s win percentage of 46.5% from 101 matches in all competitions ranks him seventh among managers with 100 or more games in charge of the club.

As Tottenham begin their search for a new manager, several high-profile candidates have emerged as potential replacements. Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, currently managing the United States national team, are among those being considered for the role.

The decision to sack Postecoglou has divided opinion among Tottenham supporters, with some questioning the timing of the move in light of the club’s recent European success. Others, however, believe that a change in leadership is necessary to address the team’s poor domestic form and ensure a more consistent performance across all competitions in the future…
