Manchester United have held “early-stage informal talks” with potential interim managers after sacking head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, sources have told ESPN.

Sources said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are among the candidates sounded out, with Ruud van Nistelrooy also under consideration. Wayne Rooney has not been approached.

The club has put Darren Fletcher in temporary charge for Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

United are looking for a seventh permanent manager after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in May 2013. Club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox have started exploratory talks to gauge interest and availability, with an experienced interim appointment favoured until the end of the season ahead of a permanent hire in the summer.

Solskjaer, sacked by United in November 2021 after a three year spell, has held informal talks and is out of work after leaving Besiktas in August. Carrick is available after leaving Middlesbrough last summer following almost three years in charge.
