UEFA has opened a formal investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior during Tuesday’s Champions League playoff first leg against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz.

An ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to assess the incident, which occurred shortly after Vinícius scored the only goal of the match midway through the second half. During his celebration, the Brazilian became involved in a confrontation with several Benfica players, including Gianluca Prestianni, before reporting alleged racial abuse to the referee.

The match was halted for ten minutes as the official activated UEFA’s anti racism protocol, with players from both sides gathering while the situation was addressed. Play eventually resumed, but the episode overshadowed Madrid’s narrow victory.

In a statement, UEFA confirmed the launch of disciplinary proceedings, saying an inspector had been tasked with investigating allegations of discriminatory behaviour during the fixture. Under UEFA regulations, a player found guilty of racial abuse can face a suspension of up to ten matches.

Prestianni later denied the accusation on social media, stating that Vinícius had misunderstood what was said. However, Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé claimed he heard the Argentine midfielder use a racist slur several times. The French international confronted Prestianni on the pitch and later spoke publicly about his distress over the incident.

Sources close to the Madrid squad said Vinícius was shaken but grateful for the support he received from teammates and staff, with Mbappé among the first to step in. Madrid officials have remained in close contact with UEFA throughout the process.

Benfica have questioned whether Madrid players could have clearly heard any alleged remarks due to crowd noise and player positioning, although former club captain Luisão criticised that stance, urging full cooperation with the investigation.

The second leg will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu next week, with Benfica needing to overturn a one goal deficit. The wider focus, however, remains on UEFA’s inquiry and the sport’s continued efforts to confront discrimination.

The outcome of the investigation is expected in the coming days and could have significant consequences for those involved.
