Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli came close to tears after seeing his team’s incredible Champions League comeback fall just short against Galatasaray on Wednesday. Despite trailing 5-2 after the first leg, Juventus produced a heroic performance in the return match, going 3-0 up and leveling the aggregate score.

However, playing almost the entire second half with 10 men following a red card for Lloyd Kelly, Juventus could not hold on. U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie scored to level the tie at 5-5 on aggregate, sending the game into extra time.

But Galatasaray proved to be the stronger side in the final stages, scoring twice in extra time to win 7-5 on aggregate.

“It almost makes me want to cry for how much we believed,” said Locatelli, visibly emotional after the final whistle. “I think we gave our heart — and more.”

Defender Federico Gatti, who scored Juventus’ second goal, admitted that the team’s fate had been sealed in the first leg. “It’s frustrating because we reached extra time a bit drained,” he said. “We had really put the game back on track, but I’ll say it again — we let it slip in the first leg. A tie like this simply can’t end that way.”

Despite the defeat, Juventus fans showed their appreciation, applauding the team for their resilience. However, Juventus’ exit means only Atalanta remains as Italy’s representative in the Champions League round of 16 after their own stunning comeback against Borussia Dortmund.

Juventus are also struggling in Serie A, sitting in fifth place, four points adrift of AS Roma, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot for next season.
