• Antonín Kinsky was substituted after 17 minutes following two costly errors in Tottenham’s loss to Atlético Madrid.
• Former goalkeepers including Peter Schmeichel and Joe Hart criticised the decision and backed the young Spurs keeper.
• Tottenham suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg in Madrid.

Several high-profile former goalkeepers have spoken out in support of Antonín Kinsky following his difficult night during Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madridin the UEFA Champions League.

The 22-year-old was making his Champions League debut at the Metropolitano Stadium but endured a challenging start as Tottenham fell three goals behind within the opening 15 minutes.

Marcos Llorente opened the scoring after an early mistake from Kinsky. Antoine Griezmann soon doubled Atlético’s advantage before another error from the Spurs goalkeeper allowed Julián Álvarez to add a third.

Tottenham manager Igor Tudor substituted Kinsky after 17 minutes, replacing him with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Tudor later said the decision was made to “preserve the guy”, though the move drew criticism from several former players.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel questioned the impact the early substitution could have on Kinsky’s confidence.

“He substitutes him, that is going to have ramifications for the rest of his career,” Schmeichel said during coverage on CBS. “When his name is mentioned in the future, the whole football world will remember this moment. He needed to be supported, at least until half-time.”

Commentating for the BBC, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson described the decision as “confidence-destroying”.

“I have never seen that on a football pitch,” Robinson said.

Kinsky later posted a message on social media thanking supporters for their encouragement.

“Thanks for the messages,” he wrote. “From dream to nightmare to dream again. See you.”

Former Manchester City and England national football team goalkeeper Joe Hart also expressed sympathy for the young goalkeeper.

“My heart is absolutely broken for him,” Hart said on TNT Sports. “He had a horrible 14 minutes. I am just heartbroken for the lad.”

Another former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea also offered support on social media.

“No one who hasn’t been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play in this position,” he wrote. “Keep your head up and you will go again.”

Vicario conceded two further goals after coming on as Tottenham were left with a difficult task ahead of the second leg following the heavy defeat in Madrid.
