Virgil van Dijk said Liverpool must not get carried away following their dominant Champions League victory over Galatasaray.

Liverpool overturned a first-leg deficit with a 4-0 win at Anfield, producing one of their most complete performances of the season to reach the quarterfinals.

“There was a lot at stake, that was pretty obvious, so we had to show how much we wanted it,” Van Dijk said.

The defender acknowledged that consistency has been an issue for the team this season despite strong individual performances.

“I think occasionally we have been playing good games but not consistently on a regular basis and it’s been frustrating for all of us and for the fans as well,” he said.

Van Dijk highlighted the physical and mental demands of competing every few days as a key challenge.

“It is very hard. That’s the hardest thing, doing it each and every three or four days. If you do that there’s a big chance you become successful,” he said.

Liverpool will now face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals, with the French side having eliminated them from the competition last season.

Van Dijk said the team must now focus on maintaining their standards rather than dwelling on a single performance.

“We have been having good performances this season and we haven’t been able to build on it the next time,” he said.

The atmosphere at Anfield was a key factor in the win, with supporters creating a strong environment after recent frustration following a draw with Tottenham Hotspur F.C..

Van Dijk emphasised the importance of unity between players and fans.

“It is about doing it together,” he said. “As players we take full responsibility when we have not been good enough.”

Liverpool now turn their attention to domestic action, with Van Dijk stressing the need to continue improving and representing the club at the highest level.
