Tuchel Suggests Maguire Faces Uphill Battle for England World Cup Spot

• Harry Maguire impresses on return but remains down pecking order
• Thomas Tuchel names four centre-backs ahead of Manchester United defender
• Injuries could yet influence final squad selection before World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Harry Maguire faces a difficult path to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad, despite a strong performance in the recent draw with Uruguay.

The England national football team defender produced a composed display on his first appearance under Tuchel, captaining the side in the second half and showing the qualities that have defined his international career. However, Tuchel made clear that his assessment of Maguire’s standing has not changed.

The England head coach confirmed that Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, John Stones and Trevoh Chalobah are currently ahead of Maguire in the central defensive hierarchy, citing differences in profile and mobility.

Tuchel praised Maguire’s reliability, aerial strength and composure on the ball, describing him as a valuable option, particularly in situations that require defensive resilience and set piece presence. He also left the door open for selection, acknowledging that injuries within the squad could yet alter the picture.

Stones remains a key figure despite limited playing time due to injury, with Tuchel highlighting his experience and game understanding as significant assets. The England manager stressed that players must be fit heading into the tournament, but suggested exceptions can be made for individuals of proven quality.

With the World Cup approaching, Tuchel is continuing to assess his defensive options, balancing current form, fitness and tactical requirements before finalising his squad.
