Mikel Arteta has urged his players to remain composed as Arsenal attempt to recover momentum in their Champions League quarter final against Sporting CP.
Arsenal enter the first leg following consecutive defeats, including a loss in the EFL Cup final against Manchester City and elimination from the FA Cup by Southampton.
Arteta said the focus should be on analysing recent performances with clarity rather than reacting emotionally. He stated that setbacks must be assessed in detail, with lessons applied to future matches while maintaining perspective on the team’s overall progress this season.
Arsenal remain in a strong position domestically, holding a significant lead at the top of the Premier League as they pursue a first league title in more than two decades. The Champions League also presents an opportunity to progress further in European competition.
Arteta confirmed that Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard are available for selection. Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber remain unavailable for the trip, with both expected to be assessed ahead of the next league fixture against AFC Bournemouth.
The manager also addressed the approach to training, referencing sessions designed to reinforce communication and collective movement within the squad. He said training activities are structured to reflect tactical and behavioural expectations during matches.
Viktor Gyokeres is set to face his former club after joining Arsenal from Sporting during the summer. The forward previously recorded a high scoring record in Portugal and recently contributed to Sweden’s qualification for a major tournament.
Arteta described the striker as motivated for the occasion and highlighted his appreciation for his time at Sporting. He added that the upcoming match represents a significant step in the player’s development at European level.
