Kai Havertz scored a stoppage time winner to secure a 1-0 victory for Arsenal against Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final in Lisbon.

The match appeared set for a goalless draw until Havertz converted from close range in added time after a pass from Gabriel Martinelli, giving Arsenal a narrow advantage ahead of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.

David Raya played a decisive role in the result, producing an early save to deny Maxi Araujo and later making multiple interventions to keep the score level. He also prevented late efforts from Sporting attackers during a sustained period of pressure.

Sporting created several opportunities across the match, with Francisco Trincao and Geny Catamo both threatening. Rui Silva was required to deal with limited attempts from Arsenal, including efforts from Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal had a goal ruled out following a video review after Martin Zubimendi found the net, with Viktor Gyokeres adjudged offside in the build up.

Mikel Arteta’s side entered the fixture after consecutive defeats but delivered a controlled performance away from home. The result strengthens their position ahead of the second leg as they aim to reach the semi finals of the competition.

Arsenal now return to domestic action with a Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth before hosting Sporting in the decisive return match.
