Premier League secures fifth Champions League place through UEFA performance ranking
- Premier League guaranteed at least five Champions League places
- Additional spot confirmed after Arsenal win over Sporting CP
- Race for fifth place remains competitive with several clubs in contention
The Premier League will have a minimum of five teams in next season’s Champions League after securing an additional European Performance Spot.
The allocation was confirmed following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory against Sporting CP in the quarter
The Premier League has led the rankings for most of the current campaign, with clubs competing across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League contributing points through results and progression.
Nine English teams entered European competition this season and all advanced from the group stage phase. Five clubs have reached the quarter finals, maintaining the league’s position in the coefficient standings.
The additional place increases the significance of the race for fifth position in the domestic table. Liverpool currently occupy that spot, holding a narrow advantage over Chelsea, while Brentford and Everton remain within close range.
Further qualification scenarios remain possible depending on European results. Aston Villa could qualify by winning the Europa League, even if they finish outside the top five. Liverpool could also secure a place by winning the Champions League under similar circumstances.
If English clubs win European competitions and finish outside the top five, additional league positions could gain access to the Champions League. In certain outcomes, qualification could extend as far as seventh place.
Nottingham Forest also remain in contention for European qualification through the Europa League despite their current league position.
The race for the second European Performance Spot remains unresolved. Spain currently lead the standings ahead of Germany and Portugal, with final outcomes dependent on results in the latter stages of European competitions.
