Neymar has been named in Brazil’s World Cup squad in a decision that, only a few days ago, felt far less certain.

The 34-year-old, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, will go to a fourth World Cup despite still working his way back from the serious ACL injury he suffered in October 2023. His inclusion reflects both his pedigree and Carlo Ancelotti’s preference for experience in key areas of his squad.

“He has improved his fitness,” said Carlo Ancelotti. “He will be an important player in this World Cup.”

There is still an acknowledgement inside the Brazil camp that Neymar is not yet fully at his peak, but Ancelotti believes there is enough time before the tournament begins for further progress.

“He can still improve his fitness until the first match of the World Cup,” he said. “He has experience in this kind of competition, the love of our group; he can create a better environment in this group.”

It is a call that underlines the manager’s broader approach since taking charge in 2025, balancing emerging talent with established names who understand the rhythm of tournament football.

Shortly before the squad was announced, Neymar added “Brazil” back into his Instagram bio alongside Santos, a small but symbolic detail that quickly drew attention in a country where every move he makes is closely followed.

Brazil’s 26-man squad also includes Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha, two players who have carried much of the attacking responsibility in recent years.

Ancelotti, who recently extended his contract through to the 2030 World Cup cycle, has had to manage a disrupted build-up, with injuries to players such as Rodrygo and Estêvão limiting some of his options.

Brazil open their tournament against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13, followed by group matches against Haiti and Scotland in Group C.

For Neymar, it is another chance on the biggest stage, and for Brazil, another reminder that they are still willing to trust familiar names when the stakes are highest.
