  • Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was named on the bench for the Premier League game with Bournemouth, four days after he blamed manager Michael Carrick’s tactics for a 4-1 defeat at Como.
  • Carrick called the decision “a football decision” and handed the armband to Harry Maguire.
  • Gary Neville said the players are a “wrecking ball” and that the dressing room “will be toxic”.

Carrick Answers His Captain With a Team Sheet

Bruno Fernandes begins Sunday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth on the substitutes’ bench. Four days after the Manchester United captain blamed manager Michael Carrick’s tactics for a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como, Carrick has answered with a team sheet. Harry Maguire takes the armband. Mason Mount and Youri Tielemans share the playmaking jobs. Asked about the decision, Carrick called it “a football decision”. Gary Neville went much further, and he was not the only pundit with a strong view.

What Fernandes Said After Como

Fernandes spoke to TNT Sports after the loss in Italy. He said the staff had decided not to press man-to-man and to leave space in behind. Asked whether the tactics were to blame, he replied: “That’s on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me.” He added that “sometimes we have to be more brave on the pressure” and said United should take the risk of pressing very high.

It was the second public criticism from a United player this month. After the 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid, Lisandro Martinez said: “I expect more from our technical director.” He added: “We expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete.” Martinez was not dropped for the next game and played 45 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Leeds. He is on the bench against Bournemouth as well, alongside Matheus Cunha, who was replaced at half-time in Italy.

Carrick’s Friday Monologue and Sunday Decision

Carrick refused on Friday to say whether Fernandes would be dropped. He opened his media conference with an emotional monologue and declined to rule out disciplinary measures. “Whatever the situation is, I will always do what is best for the football club,” he said. Asked if he had spoken to his captain, he said: “this isn’t the time to go into details.” Reports on Thursday said Fernandes would not lose the captaincy.

On Sunday Carrick explained his thinking: “When you have options it’s always a difficult decision. We have to make the right one for today and the team to get that performance we want.” He also used his programme notes to speak to supporters. “Wednesday’s performance was extremely disappointing in many ways,” he wrote. He added: “We all need to stick together but we know that we absolutely have to do better for you.”

The numbers show how rare the call is. It is only the sixth time Fernandes has been left on the bench for a Premier League game. The previous two came at the end of the 2024-25 season, when he was rested for Europa League matches. He has scored 111 goals in 338 appearances for the club. United are chasing an end to a seven-match run without a win in all competitions.

Neville: “It Will Be Toxic”

Neville told Sky Sports News the comments from Fernandes were “devastating” and “a direct attack on the manager”. “For the captain to come out and speak like he did, we’re probably only getting one or two per cent of what he actually thinks,” he said. “Imagine what they’re saying in there. It will be toxic.”

He called the two most prominent players in the team, a World Cup winner and the PFA Player of the Year, and said a number of players have been “a wrecking ball through managers for the last three or four years”. On Fernandes himself he was blunt: “he’s played awfully this season. His standards have been really poor.” Neville also said “there has to be a consequence, for Michael’s own reputation”. His summary was short: “It’s a mess.”

A Split Verdict on the Bench

Not everyone agreed that a seat on the bench is the right punishment. European football expert Julien Laurens told BBC Radio 5 Live that two senior players going after the sporting director, the owners and the manager in six days is “embarrassing” and “such a circus”. “Leave him at home, he doesn’t need to be on the bench,” he said. “It’s half of a sanction again.”

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison took the opposite view. “It’s a big call but I think it’s the right call,” he said. “You can’t call out the manager like that tactically.” Morrison said he had a big mouth as a player but always said it to the manager’s face, in the changing room or in front of people. He also named the risk for Carrick. “If they don’t get a result and you’ve dropped your best player and your captain, it will fall back on Michael Carrick.”

Carrick has made his decision in public, and the next result will show whether the squad follows him. Morrison’s own position was clear: “No-one is bigger than the football club.”
