  • Michael Carrick will take charge of Manchester United at Chelsea on Saturday, with United 16th and winless in eight.
  • Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench against Bournemouth, then liked an Instagram post reading “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care”.
  • Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were among the names United explored, and Antonio Conte is willing to talk about the job.

A Decision Everyone Expected Never Came

Manchester United spent two days getting ready to sack Michael Carrick. On Tuesday morning they kept him. He arrived at Carrington at 07:30 GMT, took training as normal, and four hours later United sources confirmed he will be in the dugout at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The reprieve follows a Bournemouth defeat at Old Trafford that ended with fans cheering Carrick around the pitch and jeering his players as they left. Asked afterwards whether he expected to be in charge at Chelsea, Carrick said: “I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal.” Few inside the club thought he would last. Even his own coaching team wondered whether they would survive.

Bruno Fernandes and the Instagram Like

The captain sits at the centre of the story. Fernandes publicly questioned Carrick’s tactics, and the inability of his coaches to spot what was going wrong, after the 4-1 defeat at Como on 21 October. A week earlier defender Lisandro Martinez had said he expected more investment in the squad and “more from our technical director”, a pointed reference to Jason Wilcox.

Against Bournemouth, Fernandes was left on the bench and did not play. Afterwards he liked an Instagram post carrying the caption: “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care”. On Monday, with the rest of the starters given the day off, both Fernandes and Carrick turned up at Carrington. Fernandes was there for pre-planned treatment. Carrick watched an Under-21s game played behind closed doors. Chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox were at the training ground too, talking through what the next few weeks should look like.

By Tuesday the mood on the grass looked calmer. Carrick and Fernandes, along with several other players, signed autographs and posed for photographs with a group of fans invited to the training ground.

Stay of Execution or Right Call?

Sky Sports analysts split on the decision. Rob Dorsett called it “a stay of execution” and said it feels like United “haven’t sorted out a replacement yet” rather than a vote of confidence. His colleague Kaveh Solhekol took the opposite view: “I think it’s the right decision. You have to give a manager time.” Solhekol also pointed out that Carrick signed a new contract only months ago.

Alan Smith sided with Dorsett. “The silence from the top on supporting Carrick has been deafening,” he said, and he asked what the decision does for Carrick’s authority when “all the lads in there will know the gaffer is probably on his way out”. On Fernandes, Smith described a no-win situation. Bring him back after a 3-0 home defeat and teammates might think Carrick has been weak. Leave him out and lose, and Carrick is criticised for dropping his best player.

Inside the club, the blame is not being pinned on Carrick alone. Senior figures think a squad capable of Champions League qualification is badly underperforming. One player told the BBC: “The feeling is that we all want to put it right. Players, staff, everyone.” It is not known whether “we” includes Fernandes, and no one has said what conversations have taken place between captain and coach.

The Names on the Shortlist

A former senior United official was blunt about the call. “Ordinarily, Michael would have gone,” he said. “The last two performances were unacceptable and team discipline is broken. Not doing it is fascinating and risky.”

Cynics point to the lack of a ready replacement. United explored Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, and appointing Howe would trigger a multi-million pound compensation payment to Newcastle. Antonio Conte is willing to have a conversation about the job. No direct contact has been made. Kieran McKenna is also out of work. Unai Emery has strong backing at United, but the club are realistic about their chances of tempting him from Aston Villa.

Wilcox is under scrutiny as well. One source close to the club feels he will eventually lose his job if United make a third managerial change in as many seasons, and another senior figure in the game suggested Berrada could also be vulnerable.

Chelsea, Roma, Villa, Then the Break

The calendar gives Carrick a short runway. After Chelsea, United face Roma in the Champions League three days later, then in-form Aston Villa, before a two-week international break. No one at the club is saying it out loud, but that break looks like the natural point to decide whether a change is needed. Carrick speaks to the media on Thursday, and the questions about Fernandes will arrive with him.
