A Homecoming Presentation That Ended With the Bar
Harry Kane says he could have played for another hour and the ball still would not have gone in. That was the England captain’s verdict on a Saturday night at the Allianz Arena that opened with the Ballon d’Or in his hands and closed with a penalty off the crossbar. Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund, and Kane became the first player in 14 years to miss a spot kick in Der Klassiker. It was his first match after collecting the Golden Ball on Monday, and he spoke about the miss in the mixed zone.
The Trophy Comes Out Before Kick-Off
Kane had been crowned the world’s best player on Monday night, ending England’s 25-year Ballon d’Or wait. Bayern gave him a presentation before the game. Both sets of players and the match officials lined up on the pitch, and Kane walked out of the tunnel with the trophy.
Bayern’s players and fans gave him a standing ovation while Land of Hope and Glory played over the stadium sound system. Some Dortmund fans could be heard booing. His wife Kate, his four children, his parents and his brother Charlie were waiting on the grass, and he greeted every one of them.
Kane then took a microphone. “I’m extremely proud to be a Bayern player,” he told the home crowd, and he thanked them for the incredible support they have given him from the day he arrived. “I hope to win many more titles with you,” he said, before finishing in German with “Danke!”
Laimer, the Bar and a Late Equaliser
Konrad Laimer put Bayern ahead, and Kane stepped up to take the penalty. He hit the bar.
Serhou Guirassy levelled for Dortmund. Kane then set up Dayot Upamecano for a goal that made it 2-1, but Fabio Silva equalised for the visitors in the 89th minute. Both clubs now have 18 points from five wins and three draws, and Bayern top the Bundesliga on goal difference.
Kane Takes It on the Chin
Kane did not look for excuses. “Today probably wasn’t my best performance or the team’s best performance, but that’s just life,” he told Bulinews in the post-match mixed zone.
“It’s part of being a striker and a footballer.”
“I could have been out there playing for another hour today, and the ball wouldn’t hit the back of the net.”
“You have to take that on the chin sometimes.”
Two injuries added to the night. Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry both suffered injuries. “It was a strange night all round,” Kane said. “We have to see how the injuries are. A couple didn’t look so good.”
Bayern are also without their manager. Vincent Kompany was only recently discharged from hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground. In his acceptance speech after the Ballon d’Or win, Kane had spoken to him directly: “I know he is at home or still in the hospital. Wishing you well. I hope this gave you a bit of energy.”
The Season So Far
The miss does not change the numbers. Kane has scored 10 goals in 13 appearances for Bayern in all competitions this season, and he is 33. The award rewarded 73 goals in 2025-26, a domestic Treble with Bayern and a third-place finish at the World Cup as England captain. Michael Owen in 2001 was the last English winner before him. Kane was an unused substitute in the 6-1 win over Magdeburg in midweek, so Saturday was his first appearance after lifting the trophy.
What Comes Next
Kane expects a crowded run of fixtures to bring rotation. “We’re at that stage of the season where we have that many games coming up,” he said. “We have to think about using the squad a lot,” he added, and “there’s no doubt we will use the squad.”
His own focus is Atlético Madrid. “I’ll be ready to go,” Kane said. “It’s an important game for us.” The trip is “a really tough place away from home”, he added, and “we’re going to need everyone to step up.”
