Mohamed Salah has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
The 33-year-old confirmed the decision in a video message, bringing an end to a nine-year spell at Anfield after joining from AS Roma in 2017.
“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” Salah said. “I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”
Despite signing a two-year contract extension in April 2025, Liverpool confirmed the decision was made following an agreement over his future, with Salah set to depart on a free transfer.
Salah described his time at the club as life-changing, reflecting on both successes and challenges during his stay on Merseyside.
“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion. It’s a history. It’s a spirit,” he said. “I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.”
He also paid tribute to supporters and teammates, referencing moments including the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of former teammate Diogo Jota.
“I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here,” he added. “Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life.”
Salah leaves Liverpool as one of the most decorated and influential players in the club’s history, having won multiple major honours including the Premier League and Champions League.
He has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, making him the third-highest scorer in Liverpool history behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
Liverpool said plans to celebrate Salah’s contribution will take place later in the year, with the forward focused on finishing the current season strongly.
