Morecambe have sacked manager Derek Adams just one day after the club was officially acquired by new owners Panjab Warriors.

Adams, 50, was in his third stint in charge of the Shrimps after being reappointed in June 2024. The Scot had previously managed the club from November 2019 to June 2021, guiding them to promotion to League One via the play-offs, and again from February 2022 to November of that year.

His latest tenure lasted 14 months but ended with relegation from League Two. Despite remaining with Morecambe during a chaotic pre-season marked by uncertainty over the club’s long-term future, the change in ownership has brought a swift leadership shake-up.

In a statement, the club expressed gratitude for Adams’ contribution: “The club gives its sincere gratitude to Derek for the leadership and steadiness he brought to the club throughout a testing chapter. His return instilled direction and purpose, helping guide Morecambe into League One for the first time in their history [in 2021] and stabilised the team under immense pressure. As the club enters a new era, a strategic transition in leadership has been made with respect and appreciation for Derek’s services.”

The decision comes amid a significant off-field transformation. Panjab Warriors completed their takeover on Sunday following a turbulent summer that saw Morecambe suspended from the National League and forced to postpone their opening three fixtures.

On Monday, the club confirmed it had received funds from the new owners to pay outstanding wages, football creditors, and liabilities to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). They pledged that “wages, liabilities and football creditors would be paid by Wednesday.”

Panjab Warriors outlined their immediate focus in a statement, admitting that promotion ambitions would be delayed: “Although its initial aim was to challenge for promotion back to the English Football League (EFL), the events and circumstances of the past couple of months will make it difficult to achieve that this season. The priority for this season will be to ensure that we have a competitive team on the pitch, and rebuild the foundations behind the scenes, and develop processes, that will help us compete for promotion in the following season and beyond.”

The takeover ends Jason Whittingham’s tenure as Morecambe owner, which began in May 2018. Panjab Warriors added: “All at the club would like to thank Jason and wish him the very best for the future.”

With financial clarity now in place, Morecambe’s transfer embargo is expected to be lifted once all creditors are settled. The Shrimps are set to host Altrincham on Saturday, marking the start of their new chapter under Panjab Warriors’ stewardship.
