Manchester City Must Omit One January Signing From Champions League Knockout Stages

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola faces a difficult decision as he must leave out one of the club’s four January signings from the Champions League knockout stage squad due to UEFA regulations. The deadline for clubs to inform UEFA of their 25-man squad is 11 p.m. GMT on Thursday (6 p.m. E.T.), and each club is only allowed to make three changes from their league phase squad.

During the January transfer window, City spent €210 million ($219m) on four new players: forward Omar Marmoush, midfielder Nico González, and defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. However, at least one of these new signings will have to be omitted from the Champions League squad.

The selection headache comes at a time when Manchester City is experiencing a prolonged run of poor form. The club faces Real Madrid in the playoff stage, with the first leg scheduled for Feb. 11 at the Etihad and the return leg set for Feb. 19 at the Bernabéu.

This marks the fourth consecutive season that City and Madrid will meet in the Champions League knockout stages. Last season, the two sides drew both legs before Real Madrid progressed after winning on penalties and went on to claim the title against Borussia Dortmund. In the previous year, City won 5-1 on aggregate in the semifinals before defeating Inter Milan in the final to secure a historic treble.

As Guardiola weighs his options, the decision to leave out one of the new signings could have significant implications for Manchester City’s Champions League campaign. The club will be looking to bounce back from their recent poor form and make a strong push for European glory, but they will have to do so without the full complement of their January acquisitions.
