Wrexham reach FA Cup fifth round to extend remarkable rise

Wrexham continued their remarkable ascent by reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1997 after edging Ipswich Town 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground.

Josh Windass struck the decisive goal in the 34th minute, finishing from close range after Ryan Longman recovered an overhit cross and delivered a precise cut back. The result secured Phil Parkinson’s side a place in the last 16 and added another landmark moment to a period of unprecedented success.

Parkinson praised both the attitude and execution of his players, underlining the significance of the achievement.

“We said before the game that it was a chance to make our own bit of FA Cup history,” he said. “To reach the fifth round is important for this football club. The players respected the competition and delivered a disciplined performance.”

Both clubs are firmly in the promotion race, with Ipswich currently third in the Championship and Wrexham sixth, separated by seven points. Wrexham are chasing a fourth consecutive promotion that would take them into the Premier League for the first time in their 158 year history.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna made ten changes, signalling that league priorities lay ahead. The visitors dominated possession for long spells but struggled to convert pressure into clear opportunities, particularly in the first half when Wrexham defended compactly.

Windass nearly added a second when he forced a fine save from goalkeeper Alex Palmer, while Ollie Rathbone also went close with a curling effort. Ipswich responded strongly after the interval, creating several dangerous moments through Chuba Akpom and Elkan Baggott, but Arthur Okonkwo and Max Cleworth combined to preserve Wrexham’s slender lead.

As Ipswich pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Wrexham held firm and managed the closing stages with composure to secure a memorable victory.

The win marked Wrexham’s second triumph over higher-ranked opposition in this season’s competition following their earlier success against Nottingham Forest. Their next opponents will be confirmed in Monday’s draw, as the club continues a journey that shows no sign of slowing.
