  • Manchester United and Chelsea deny making any formal approach
  • Klopp remains content in his current role with Red Bull

Jürgen Klopp’s agent has claimed that both Manchester United and Chelsea made approaches for the former Liverpool manager after his departure from Anfield, despite firm denials from both clubs.

Marc Kosicke said the 58 year-old German was also considered for international roles with England and the United States following his decision to step down as Liverpool head coach at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

United and Chelsea strongly deny having made any approach, either directly or through intermediaries, according to the Press Association. ESPN previously reported that both England and the United States explored the possibility of appointing Klopp, but those approaches did not lead to an agreement.

Klopp spent nine highly successful years at Liverpool after earlier spells with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund. He is now head of global football with Red Bull, a role he is said to be thoroughly enjoying.

Speaking to Transfermarkt, Kosicke said: “Maybe at some point he will say he needs to smell the locker room again. But at the moment he is very, very happy in his role.

“Before joining Red Bull, Jürgen could have coached the United States or England. Probably also Germany, if Julian Nagelsmann had not already been there.

“Even Chelsea and Manchester United inquired, although Jürgen had clearly stated that he would not coach any other club in England.”

Kosicke added that Klopp takes pride in the fact he has managed only three clubs in his career and was never dismissed. “These inquiries keep coming. He is extremely happy with what he has achieved. And it is still wonderful to go down in history as one of the few coaches who only managed three clubs and were never fired.”

Kosicke also claimed the United States contacted Klopp before appointing Mauricio Pochettino in September 2024, while the Football Association turned to Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate’s successor in January 2025. The FA has been approached for comment.

Klopp has repeatedly downplayed the prospect of returning to management in the near future, though he has not entirely ruled it out. Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast in October, he said: “I said I will never coach a different team in England. So that means if I return, it is Liverpool. So yeah, theoretically it is possible.

“I love what I do right now, I do not miss coaching. I do not miss standing in the rain for three hours, I do not miss going to press conferences three times a week. I am very happy.”
