Mikel Arteta backs ‘warrior’ Bruno Guimarães to make Arsenal stronger

Mikel Arteta believes Bruno Guimarães can “ignite something different” at Arsenal after the Brazil midfielder completed his £75 million move from Newcastle United.

Guimarães was introduced to supporters at Emirates Stadium before Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup, having signed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions.

The 28-year-old strengthens an Arsenal midfield that already includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze.

Arteta believes Guimarães can add a different level of intensity and leadership to the squad as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League title.

“You can see the immediate reaction,” Arteta told Arsenal’s club website. “I think he describes himself as a warrior. I think he’s a warrior with tremendous quality as well and intuition and leadership and charisma that is going to help us, that is going to really ignite something different in the team.

“I think he’s going to push everybody inside the team as well and that’s the type of player that we need.”

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season after finishing runners-up in the previous three campaigns.

Arteta’s side also reached the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals as part of a campaign that established Arsenal as one of the strongest teams in English football.

Guimarães watched from the sidelines against Dortmund as Arsenal suffered their first defeat of preseason.

Ethan Nwaneri and Viktor Gyökeres scored for the hosts, with Gyökeres converting from the penalty spot, but Dortmund secured victory through goals from Samuele Inácio, Konstantinos Karetsas and Joane Gadou.

Arsenal won a pre-arranged penalty shootout 5-4 after the final whistle.

Arteta was disappointed with his team’s performance despite the result being decided by the friendly’s scheduled shootout.

“I’m disappointed that we lost the game,” Arteta said.

“I think there were some poor moments where we were not very recognisable, especially in set pieces and defending actions and timings that we are normally very efficient in.

“Some other very, very positive attacking combinations, big chances that some of them didn’t finish in anything because of the final pass because they were completely open.

“But overall, disappointed because you want to win the games in any context and today, we haven’t managed to do that.”

Martin Ødegaard made his first preseason appearance against Dortmund after returning from the World Cup, while Arsenal’s full squad is expected to return to training on Monday.

The arrival of Guimarães gives Arteta another established international midfielder as Arsenal prepare for another demanding season across domestic and European competitions.

The Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley on Aug. 16 will provide Arsenal’s first competitive test before they begin their Premier League title defence against newly promoted Coventry City at Emirates Stadium on Aug. 21.
