• Tottenham replaced goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky after only 17 minutes following two costly mistakes.
• Atlético Madrid raced into a four-goal lead inside 22 minutes in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.
• Spurs face a major challenge to overturn a 5-2 deficit in the second leg in London.

Tottenham Hotspur substituted goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky after just 17 minutes as they suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday.

The Spanish side took the lead early at the Cívitas Metropolitano Stadium when Marcos Llorente scored after six minutes following a mistake from Kinsky that allowed Atlético to regain possession in a dangerous area.

Antoine Griezmann doubled the advantage soon after, before another error from the Tottenham goalkeeper led directly to Atlético’s third goal. Kinsky miskicked a first time pass outside his penalty area, allowing Julián Álvarez to collect the ball and finish into an empty net.

Moments later, Tottenham captain Cristian Romero spoke with interim manager Igor Tudor before the goalkeeper was substituted. First choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario was introduced as Kinsky left the pitch and headed directly down the tunnel.

Tudor defended the decision to start the 22 year old goalkeeper but said the substitution was made to protect both the player and the team.

“I’ve been coaching 15 years and I’ve never done that,” Tudor said after the match. “It was necessary to preserve the guy and preserve the team. Before the game it was the right decision for me. Unfortunately it happened with these mistakes in a big game.”

Defenders Kevin Danso and Romero embraced Kinsky as he left the field following a difficult debut in the Champions League proper. It was only his 13th appearance for Tottenham and his first start for the club since October.

The early substitution matched the earliest goalkeeper change in a Champions League knockout match. Grégory Coupet was also taken off after 17 minutes for Olympique Lyonnais against Real Sociedad during the 2003-04 round of 16.

Atlético continued to dominate after the change as Robin Le Normand scored the fourth goal in the 22nd minute, making it one of the quickest four goal bursts in Champions League history. Only Real Madrid have scored four goals faster in a Champions League match.

Tottenham improved after the break, with goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke either side of a second goal from Álvarez.

Despite the late response, Tottenham now face a significant challenge in the second leg in north London after falling to a 5-2 deficit. The result also increases pressure on Tudor, who took charge last month with the team having lost its previous five matches before the trip to Madrid.

“It’s not about my job,” Tudor said. “It’s about how to help the team. I recognise the problems we have and every game something happens that is difficult to explain.”
