Lionel Messi Disappointed After Finalissima Cancellation
- Lionel Messi was disappointed after the cancellation of the Finalissima between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team.
- The match had been scheduled for March 27 in Qatar before being called off due to regional political tensions.
- Messi reportedly viewed the game as an important competitive test ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi was left disappointed following the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima, according to a source who spoke to ESPN.
The match between Argentina, winners of the 2024 Copa América, and Spain, champions of UEFA Euro 2024, had been scheduled to take place in Qatar on March 27.
However, the fixture was cancelled after organisers deemed Qatar unsuitable to host the game due to the ongoing political tensions in the region.
A statement from UEFA confirmed the decision.
“After much discussion between UEFA and the organizing authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar,” UEFA said.
“UEFA explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentine Football Association.”
Sources told ESPN that Messi had hoped to approach the match as a serious competitive test ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The Inter Miami CF forward was not involved in the negotiations that ultimately led to the cancellation.
CONMEBOL later said that alternative venues and dates had been discussed during talks with UEFA and the organising committees.
According to the South American governing body, the Argentine Football Association accepted the idea of staging the match at a different venue but proposed March 31 as the date.
UEFA, however, stated that staging the game on March 31, four days later than the original date, was not feasible.
Despite speculation surrounding the decision-making process, a source confirmed to ESPN that Messi had no role in the negotiations.
The Argentina captain reportedly viewed the Finalissima as an opportunity to secure the 49th team trophy of his career.
Messi is the most decorated player in football history and most recently added to his honours list after helping Inter Miami win the MLS Cup in December.
