  • Pep Guardiola dismissed speculation about his future after Manchester City F.C. exited the UEFA Champions League.
  • City were eliminated by Real Madrid C.F. following a 5-1 aggregate defeat.
  • Guardiola said the club will return stronger next season despite the setback.

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City have a “bright future” after their Champions League campaign ended with defeat to Real Madrid.

City lost 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate, marking the third consecutive season they have been eliminated by the Spanish side.

Asked whether it could be his final game in the competition as City manager, Guardiola laughed off the suggestion.

“Oh, everybody wants to fire me, right?” Guardiola said.

“One day I will come here and say, ‘bye bye, guys!’ And still I’m here, one more year of contract.”

“The future will be bright and next season we will be back.”

City made a strong start but were reduced to 10 men after Bernardo Silva was sent off for handling a shot on the line.

Vinícius Júnior converted the resulting penalty and later added a second goal in stoppage time after Erling Haaland had equalised before half-time.

Guardiola defended Silva, describing the incident as a reaction rather than a mistake.

“It is not a mistake, it is a reaction,” he said. “It can be avoided, but I will never blame my player for that.”

He added that playing with 10 men made it difficult to compete against a team of Real Madrid’s quality.

“I would have loved to have played 11 against 11, but football happens,” Guardiola said. “Madrid are an extraordinary team that punishes you when you make a mistake.”

Despite needing goals in the second half, Guardiola substituted Haaland with more than 30 minutes remaining.

He later confirmed the decision was tactical and said the striker should be fit for the upcoming EFL Cup Final against Arsenal F.C..
