Theo Walcott has issued a heartfelt warning to Max Dowman over the prospect of a fast-tracked call-up to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The Arsenal youngster has emerged as one of the Premier League’s brightest prospects, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the competition’s history at just 16 years and 73 days after scoring in a win over Everton.

His rapid rise has sparked debate about a potential inclusion in England national team boss Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans, although he was not included in the recent senior training camp.

Walcott, who famously went to the 2006 World Cup at 17 under Sven-Göran Eriksson, believes Dowman should not rush into senior international football.

“I hope he doesn’t go,” Walcott said. “If I could go back, I would change things. He needs to grow at his own pace, especially emotionally.”

Walcott explained that being thrust into the spotlight too early forced him to mature quickly, something he believes is not necessary for Dowman given England’s current depth.

With players like Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes already competing for attacking roles, Walcott argued there is no immediate need to fast-track the teenager.

Despite his record-breaking season, Dowman is currently developing with England’s youth setup, with a focus on gradual progression rather than immediate senior exposure.

Walcott’s comments underline the ongoing debate around managing young talent, with the emphasis firmly on balancing opportunity with long-term development.
