Mikel Arteta has criticised recent refereeing decisions involving Arsenal, claiming his side have been denied key advantages in consecutive matches despite their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Eberechi Eze’s early goal secured the win at the Emirates Stadium, sending Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League. However, Arteta was frustrated that Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was only shown a yellow card after fouling substitute Viktor Gyökeres late in the game.

A VAR check upheld the on-field decision, but Arteta insisted the challenge warranted a dismissal.

“I have to say in my opinion it is a clear red card,” Arteta said. “I have watched it many times. If you have ever played football, it is a red card.”

The Arsenal manager also referenced a similar moment in last week’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, when Kai Havertz was challenged by Abdukodir Khusanov with the score level. Referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue.

Arteta believes those decisions have had a significant impact on the title race.

“These are the margins,” he said. “It is a red card today, it is a red card in Manchester and the world is different.”

Despite his frustration, Arteta emphasised he was not making excuses, pointing out that his comments came after a victory rather than a defeat.

Arsenal’s win was tempered by injury concerns, with both Havertz and goalscorer Eze forced off during the match. Arteta described the issues as minor muscular problems but said it remains unclear whether they will be available for the upcoming Champions League semifinal against Atlético Madrid.

Arsenal now turn their focus to that European clash, while maintaining their advantage at the top of the Premier League table.
