  • Swindon manager Ian Holloway said “The owner’s a dead man walking as well” moments after his viral zombie rant.
  • Fans are tired of the noise: podcast founder Rich Pullen said the manager’s outbursts are “exhausting” for a growing share of supporters.
  • The Swindon Town Supporters Trust urged Holloway’s comments about owner Clem Morfuni to “be a wake-up call” for the club.

Neutrals Saw a Character, Swindon Fans Saw a Pattern

Eyes bulging, Ian Holloway boomed the letter “D” and stabbed himself in the chest with an imaginary dagger. Then “M”, another stab. Then “W”, a third. “Dead. Man. Walking,” the Swindon manager declared, before sinking into a zombie stupor. “That’s how it feels.” The clip went viral this month, and plenty of neutrals decided one of football’s great characters had lost the plot.

Inside Swindon, the reaction was different. A large section of supporters rolled their eyes, according to the Guardian’s report from the Memorial Stadium after a goalless draw at Bristol Rovers. What got far less attention was the line that followed the zombie act. “The owner’s a dead man walking as well and that over-complicates everything here,” Holloway said.

The owner is Clem Morfuni, an Australian who saved the club from probable administration in 2021. Fans have turned on him. He has failed to sell up and has added millions to the club’s debt. Days after Holloway’s rant, the Swindon Town Supporters Trust said the manager’s words about Morfuni should “be a wake-up call”. It pointed to “a wedge with supporters so obvious that even the manager openly talks about it”.

A Manager With a History of Clashing With Fans

Holloway took the Swindon job two years ago on a Sunday. Within weeks he had told fans they could “go bowling” if they did not like his methods. Last December he had to be restrained by his players in an altercation with a fan. He has made a habit of telling critical supporters to “jog on”.

The latest flashpoint came after a point against Walsall last week, when the goalkeeping coach held him back from another confrontation with supporters. Asked about it, Holloway goaded reporters into putting his address online so that unhappy fans could confront him. “I don’t really care anymore,” he said.

Rich Pullen, founder and co-host of the largest Swindon podcast, Loathed Strangers, said the gap between the outside view and the inside one is wide. Outsiders hear the soundbites and focus on “what a great character he is” and how he “says it like it is”, Pullen said. “But, to a growing percentage of the Swindon community, it’s exhausting and it takes away from any of the good.”

Pullen said the problem reaches the good days too. “If Swindon win, post-match he often uses it as an opportunity to have a go at the fans. It’s got to the stage where you can’t even enjoy a win without Ian Holloway being unable to hold himself from criticising fans.” He added that people are “tired of the excess noise”.

Form Has Improved, the Unrest Has Not

A week ago, the trip to Bristol Rovers looked like it could hasten the end of Holloway’s tenure. Swindon were winless in eight games in all competitions. Then they won 3-1 at Barnet, handing the high-flying hosts their first league defeat of the season, with goalkeeper Connor Ripley starring. Ripley had recently said the whole squad would “run through a brick wall” for Holloway.

At Rovers, Matty Virtue missed an open goal 90 seconds into the game and the match finished goalless. The result stretched Swindon’s unbeaten run to three games and keeps them safely mid-table in League Two. Reporter Ben Bloom judged that Holloway was right to savour the better performances, but that the malaise runs deeper.

The Trust made the same point. It said the short-term focus might be on the manager, but the problems sit above his role. The manager is one cog in a machine that many argue has been misfiring for some time. For the supporters, the ask is simple: a united club and a manager they can get behind, not one telling them to go jogging.
