Galatasaray sparked controversy after posting criticism of referees on social media during their 3-0 win over rivals Fenerbahce in the Istanbul derby.

The Turkish league leaders took to their official accounts at half-time, expressing frustration over officiating decisions despite leading the match.

“Despite these referees, we’re still leading 1-0,” the club wrote, alongside further comments accusing officials of ignoring two clear penalty claims.

On their English-language account, Galatasaray added: “Don’t let the score distract you from the fact that two clear penalties for Galatasaray have been ignored by the referee and the VAR room in the first half.”

The posts came just days after the club announced they were suspending relations with the Turkish Football Federation over disputes regarding referee appointments.

On the pitch, Galatasaray delivered a commanding performance to all but secure another league title. Victor Osimhen opened the scoring before Barış Alper Yılmaz converted a penalty in the second half, with Lucas Torreira adding a third goal late on.

The result leaves Galatasaray seven points clear at the top of the table with three games remaining, putting them on the brink of a fourth consecutive title.

The rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce remains one of the fiercest in world football, although recent meetings have been dominated by Galatasaray.

Debates around refereeing standards are a recurring theme in the Turkish Super League, with high-profile figures previously sanctioned for criticism of officials.

Despite the off-field controversy, Galatasaray’s victory further strengthens their position as they close in on another domestic triumph.
