Wayne Rooney has rejected Harry Kane’s assessment that there was “amazing defending” in Bayern Munich’s dramatic 5-4 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League semifinal first leg.

Kane, who scored in the nine-goal thriller at the Parc des Princes, defended the performances of both teams’ back lines despite a record-setting game that saw each side score at least four goals.

The England striker highlighted the difficulty defenders face against elite attackers and credited their efforts throughout a high-intensity match.

However, Rooney strongly disagreed, arguing that the defending on display fell well below the standard expected at that level.

“I love Harry Kane, but there’s no way he can be praising his defenders,” Rooney said. “The defending from both teams was really bad, if he’s being honest.”

Rooney suggested that the attacking quality on show overshadowed fundamental defensive responsibilities, leading to a chaotic encounter.

He also pointed to a lack of communication among defenders, contrasting it with previous eras where vocal leadership was more evident on the pitch.

“It was a crazy and chaotic game,” Rooney added, questioning tactical decisions from both sides, including PSG’s approach after establishing a commanding lead.

Despite the defensive concerns, the match delivered an entertaining spectacle, setting up a finely balanced second leg in Germany next week.

With a place in the final at stake, both teams are likely to focus on tightening their defensive structure while maintaining their attacking threat.
