Martin Ødegaard has urged Arsenal to embrace the opportunity to make history as they prepare for their Champions League semifinal against Atlético Madrid.

Arsenal travel to the Metropolitano for Wednesday’s first leg aiming to reach their first final in the competition since 2005, having never lifted Europe’s top club trophy.

Despite strong performances this season, the club has faced criticism for falling short in key moments, including last year’s semifinal defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and consecutive runner-up finishes in the Premier League.

Ødegaard acknowledged those near misses but stressed the importance of focusing on the present.

“It’s always going to be there until we win it,” he said. “We need to take the experiences and use them in a good way. At the moment, we are in an amazing position in the league and in the Champions League.”

The midfielder emphasised the importance of enjoying the occasion, describing this stage of the season as what players dream of throughout their careers.

Arsenal head into the tie unbeaten in the competition this season but will be without injured duo Kai Havertz and Jurriën Timber. However, Bukayo Saka and Riccardo Calafiori are available again, boosting the squad.

Ødegaard believes the team is stronger than last year, citing improved experience and preparation.

“I feel like we’ve learned from last season and we’re more ready now,” he said.

Manager Mikel Arteta echoed that sentiment, framing the semifinal as a defining moment for the club.

“This is the stage we want to be,” Arteta said. “Now is the moment to make a statement and show how good we are.”

With both domestic and European success still within reach, Arsenal have the chance to redefine their recent narrative and take a decisive step toward silverware.
