Manchester United Weigh Manager Options Despite Carrick’s Strong Case
- Michael Carrick leads the race for the permanent role after strong interim results
- Manchester United plan full recruitment process before making final decision
- Andoni Iraola among candidates to show interest in Old Trafford position
Manchester United are determined to conduct a thorough search for their next permanent head coach despite Michael Carrick emerging as the leading candidate.
Carrick has impressed since taking charge on an interim basis in January, winning nine of his 13 matches following the departure of Ruben Amorim. His impact has helped lift United to the brink of UEFA Champions League qualification, strengthening his case to take the role permanently.
However, club officials remain committed to exploring all available options before making a final appointment. Sources indicate that several managerial candidates have made informal contact to discuss the position and outline their visions for the club.
Among those linked is Andoni Iraola, who has confirmed he will leave AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season. Iraola is also attracting interest from Chelsea and is viewed as a strong contender due to his Premier League experience, attacking philosophy, and ability to operate within a structured club model.
United have intentionally limited formal discussions with external candidates to avoid disrupting the team during a crucial period. Carrick’s side require just two more points to secure a return to the Champions League and could confirm qualification against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Beyond results on the pitch, Carrick has also been involved in off-field planning, including discussions over new contracts for key players such as Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo.
Another factor in the decision-making process is the future of assistant coach Steve Holland, who joined Carrick’s staff in January and has played a significant role alongside figures such as Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.
While Carrick remains firmly in contention, Manchester United are taking a measured approach as they look to make a long-term appointment aligned with the club’s future ambitions.
