Switzerland forward Breel Embolo is facing an anxious wait to join his country’s World Cup squad after being denied boarding on the team’s flight to the United States because of a criminal conviction.

The Swiss Football Association confirmed at the team’s training camp in San Diego that Embolo applied for an urgent visa at the United States Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, one day after his travel authorization was placed under review.

The issue stems from a conviction that became legally binding earlier this year. Embolo was originally charged following an altercation in central Basel in 2018, with his guilty verdict upheld on appeal last September. The ruling was finalized in April, only weeks before Switzerland’s departure for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the Swiss federation, U.S. authorities sought clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the case.

“The embassy’s inquiries focused specifically on whether any physical violence had been involved. This was not the case,” the federation said in a statement.

“Breel and the team are now awaiting approval so that he can travel to San Diego and join the squad as soon as possible.”

The situation has created uncertainty around one of Switzerland’s most important players less than two weeks before the tournament begins for the national team.

Embolo is expected to lead Switzerland’s attack at the World Cup and enters the tournament as the country’s first-choice striker. The 29-year-old has scored 24 goals in 86 appearances for the national team and is preparing for what would be the third World Cup of his career.

Switzerland open their Group B campaign against Qatar on June 13 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

They will then face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Inglewood before concluding the group stage against co-host Canada in Vancouver on June 24.

Swiss officials remain hopeful that Embolo’s visa application will be approved in time for him to join the squad and participate in the tournament.
