FIFA cancels free World Cup tickets after website glitch as ticketing scrutiny grows

  • FIFA has canceled around 60 World Cup tickets that were mistakenly issued for free because of a checkout error on its official ticketing platform.
  • Affected supporters have been told their seats remain reserved but must now pay the correct ticket price to secure them.
  • The latest mishap adds to growing controversy around FIFA’s World Cup ticketing system, which is already under investigation by authorities in New York and New Jersey.

FIFA has canceled approximately 60 tickets for the 2026 World Cup after a website error allowed supporters to obtain seats without paying, in the latest setback for a ticketing system already facing mounting criticism.

The governing body confirmed on Thursday that the tickets had been “allocated at no charge (0 USD)” because of a payment issue during the checkout process. FIFA said the mistake was identified and the affected tickets have now been withdrawn.

“FIFA regrets the error and any inconvenience caused,” the organization said in a statement. It added that the seats remain reserved for the affected supporters, who have been invited to complete payment at the correct price if they still wish to attend.

The error occurred during sales on May 21, according to emails sent by FIFA to buyers. The incident is another unwelcome headline for an organization already facing questions over its handling of World Cup ticket sales.

The ticketing operation is currently under investigation by authorities in New York and New Jersey, who are examining whether FIFA’s practices may have breached consumer protection laws. Concerns have centered on soaring prices, dynamic pricing policies and confusion around seat allocation.

The latest glitch also raises fresh questions about a ticketing program that has generated significant frustration among supporters. FIFA president Gianni Infantino declared in February that all 104 matches of the expanded tournament had sold out, yet tickets remain available through FIFA’s official sales channels ahead of next week’s opening match in Mexico City.

Pricing remains one of the biggest talking points surrounding the tournament. Tickets for the 2026 World Cup have reached levels far beyond previous editions, with FIFA arguing that the increased revenue will help fund football development projects around the world through its member associations.

FIFA has taken direct control of ticket sales and pricing for the tournament as part of a broader strategy to manage World Cup operations in-house, rather than relying on local organizing committees as in previous tournaments.

The organization has also launched its own official resale platform, charging a 15 percent commission to both buyers and sellers. Despite that effort, secondary marketplaces continue to offer large numbers of tickets for many matches.

The contrast with the original hosting bid has not gone unnoticed. When the United States, Canada and Mexico secured hosting rights in 2018, organizers pledged that hundreds of thousands of group-stage tickets would be made available for as little as $21.

With the tournament now just days away, FIFA faces renewed pressure to restore confidence in a ticketing process that has become almost as talked about as the football itself. For supporters who thought they had secured a free trip to the World Cup, reality has arrived with a considerably higher price tag.
