  • Gonzalo Plata scored a late winner as Ecuador came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and reach the World Cup knockout stage.
  • Ecuador advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after their first win over UEFA opposition since 2013.
  • Germany still finished top of Group E despite seeing their 11-match winning streak come to an end.

Ecuador booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after Gonzalo Plata’s late winner secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over already-qualified Germany at MetLife Stadium on Thursday.

Plata struck in the 77th minute to complete Ecuador’s turnaround after Leroy Sané had given Germany an early lead and Nilson Angulo equalised before halftime. The victory guarantees Ecuador progress as one of the tournament’s best eight third-placed teams and marks only the second time in the nation’s history that they have reached the World Cup knockout rounds, following their run in 2006.

Germany had already secured top spot in Group E after winning their opening two matches, but their 11-game winning streak came to an end one short of matching the national team’s all-time record set between 1979 and 1980.

Sané gave Germany the perfect start, scoring after just one minute and 50 seconds. Aleksandar Pavlović won possession before combining with Florian Wirtz, who supplied the Bayern Munich winger to fire home his 18th international goal.

Ecuador responded quickly through Angulo after Felix Nmecha was dispossessed in midfield by Pedro Vite. The midfielder released Angulo, who drove towards goal before beating Manuel Neuer with a composed finish from just outside the penalty area.

The decisive moment arrived 13 minutes from time. Following a Pedro Vite corner, Kevin Rodríguez flicked the ball on inside the six-yard box, allowing Plata to react first. As Neuer attempted to gather possession, the Ecuador forward stretched out a toe to divert the ball beyond the veteran goalkeeper and into the net.

Plata’s goal completed a memorable night for Ecuador, with the winger recovering after taking a kick to the head during Germany’s opening goal earlier in the contest.

The result ended Ecuador’s wait for a victory over UEFA opposition in any competition, with their previous success dating back to 2013.

Germany’s defensive concerns also continued despite topping the group. Neuer has now conceded four goals at the tournament while making only three saves, and Germany have failed to keep a clean sheet in nine consecutive World Cup matches, equalling the longest such run in the nation’s history between 1934 and 1954.

The second half also featured a major VAR intervention. American referee Tori Penso initially awarded Germany a penalty less than 30 seconds after the restart when Joel Ordóñez challenged Kai Havertz inside the area. However, following a video review, the decision was overturned after Sané was judged to have committed a foul on Vite earlier in the move.

Germany will now turn their attention to the round of 32, where they are expected to face one of Paraguay, Australia or Sweden in Foxborough on Monday.

The match also helped set another tournament milestone. FIFA confirmed the attendance of 80,663 at MetLife Stadium pushed total attendance for the 2026 World Cup to 3,605,357 spectators, surpassing the previous tournament record established during the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
