Spain’s World Cup triumph ended in chaotic scenes as players from both sides became involved in a confrontation moments after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium following a fiercely contested final against Argentina.

Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner secured a 1-0 victory for Spain and delivered a second FIFA World Cup title, ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy. The closing stages, however, reflected the intensity that had defined the contest, with emotions spilling over once the match was over.

The most serious flashpoint involved Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes and Spain defender Eric García.

As players gathered near the centre of the pitch, Paredes confronted García before appearing to place a hand on the defender’s throat, sending the Spain international to the ground. The incident immediately drew players, substitutes and members of both coaching staffs into a wider confrontation before officials and teammates restored order.

The altercation followed an increasingly physical final that had already tested the referee throughout the evening.

Argentina finished the match with 10 players after Enzo Fernández received a straight red card in the closing moments of normal time for a challenge on Pau Cubarsí. Lionel Scaloni’s side also collected six yellow cards during a contest marked by persistent fouls, strong tackles and repeated stoppages.

Paredes had entered the match as a substitute before receiving a booking of his own following a robust challenge, and his involvement in the post-match confrontation added to a frustrating conclusion for the defending champions.

Once tempers cooled, the atmosphere changed noticeably.

Several Spain players crossed the pitch to console Lionel Messi following the defeat, while coaches Luis de la Fuente and Scaloni embraced in the centre circle before the trophy presentation.

Scaloni refused to allow the post-match scenes to overshadow either Spain’s achievement or the effort shown by his own players throughout the tournament.

“We are gracious in victory, and we must be so in defeat,” Scaloni said.

“We accept the loss. We gave everything.”

The Argentina coach also praised the commitment shown by his squad, insisting their performances throughout the competition should remain a source of pride despite falling one match short of retaining the World Cup.

“You lose, and you have to pick yourself up again,” he said.

Spain’s victory completed an outstanding tournament for Luis de la Fuente’s side, while Argentina were left to reflect on a campaign that ended with frustration both on the scoreboard and after the final whistle.
