LA Galaxy Complete Signing of Former Celtic Golden Boot Winner Kyogo Furuhashi From Birmingham City

The LA Galaxy have acquired forward Kyogo Furuhashi from English Championship side Birmingham City, the club announced this week. The 31-year-old Japanese international signs through the 2030-31 season, giving Major League Soccer’s most decorated recent champion a proven scorer with a Scottish Premiership Golden Boot on his resume.

Furuhashi joins the Galaxy with 154 goals and 55 assists in 384 professional matches, a record built primarily across his time at Celtic. He scored 85 goals with 19 assists in 165 appearances for the Scottish giants, helping the club to eight domestic trophies, including three Premiership titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

His finest individual season came in 2022-23, when he scored 27 league goals in 36 appearances on his way to winning both the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award and the Golden Boot, finishing with 34 goals in all competitions as Celtic completed a domestic treble. Puig’s second consecutive ACL tear was a significant blow for a Galaxy side that had built its attack around his creativity, and the club’s response has been to add proven finishers rather than rely on one central playmaker to carry the offense. Klauss, Pec, Paintsil, Reus and now Furuhashi gives the Galaxy’s coaching staff a genuine surplus of attacking options heading into the stretch run of the MLS regular season, a contrast from a year ago when the loss of a single player could derail the team’s attacking output.

That depth also creates competition for minutes that Furuhashi has not faced for some time. At Celtic he was the focal point of the attack for four seasons. At Birmingham he could not hold down a regular starting spot even when fit.
