Evander Says FC Cincinnati Have “All the Conditions to Win” as They Chase a Second-Half Turnaround

Evander has barely had a day off in the last two weeks, and he is not expecting one anytime soon. FC Cincinnati’s playmaker led the club back from MLS’s FIFA World Cup break with a wild 4-3 win over Thomas Muller and Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 22, then made the trip north for a tight Hell is Real derby that slipped away 2-1 to Columbus Crew the following weekend. From there it was straight to Charlotte for the MLS All-Star Game, where he traded stories with Muller and other stars at the Skills Challenge before scoring the game-winner in a 4-3 win over the LIGA MX All-Stars at Bank of America Stadium.

Now he is back in Cincinnati preparing for another big one: a Walmart Saturday Showdown against Western Conference co-leaders San Jose Earthquakes at TQL Stadium, one of the standout fixtures on Matchday 19 of the MLS regular season.

“We Need to Give a Win to the Fans at Home”

Evander summed up the mood heading into the San Jose match in blunt terms when he spoke with FCCincinnati.com’s Carter Chapley after the derby defeat. “After a tough game last weekend,” he said, “we need to give a win to the fans at home. Need to get back and prepare for that.”

The stretch he has just come through is the kind MLS players increasingly have to manage in a World Cup year, when the league paused its regular season for almost two months and then crammed fixtures, an All-Star break and derby games into a compressed run of weeks. Now in his fourth season in MLS, Cincinnati’s Brazilian creator has grown used to that rhythm, and he treats it as the kind of moment he wants rather than dreads. “With the responsibility that I have,” Evander told MLSsoccer.com in Charlotte, “I have to do well every game, and with no excuses, and try to do best for the team. It doesn’t matter if it’s an easy game or a hard game, I’ve just got to do my job and help the team in the best way.”

A Third Straight Double-Digit Season

The numbers back up the responsibility he describes. With three goals and five assists in FC Cincinnati’s last three matches, Evander is now up to 10 goals and 8 assists in league action this season, marking the third consecutive year in which he has reached double figures for goals. Given his current pace, MLSsoccer.com’s reporting suggests it is likely only a matter of time before he matches that total in assists too. That consistency has already been recognized league-wide: Evander was named to the MLS Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, and he was a finalist for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award in 2024, when his 34 combined goals and assists trailed only Lionel Messi across the entire league.

That kind of output is exactly what made Cincinnati such a difficult opponent for San Jose to face at this point in the season. The Earthquakes arrive at TQL Stadium still hunting their first win coming out of the World Cup break, after a stretch that has undone much of the good work from earlier in the year. Bruce Arena’s side put together a record-setting start to the 2026 campaign, winning nine of their first ten games, but they have gone on to suffer a 4-0 home defeat to Antoine Griezmann and a resurgent Orlando City side, before playing out a 1-1 Cali Clasico draw against rivals LA Galaxy last week.

Evander was careful to credit San Jose’s quality even while sizing up the opportunity in front of his own team. “Of course, Bruce is one of the most successful coaches in the league, and San Jose has been doing a really great season,” he said, “but I think it’s a moment that we should take advantage, and we’re going to be playing at home, which is good. We have all the conditions to win the game.”

An Attack Built at Record Cost

Cincinnati’s front line is not cheap. The club acquired Evander from Portland Timbers in February 2025 for $12 million, the largest cash-for-player trade in MLS history, after he had put together back-to-back standout seasons in Portland that included 15 goals and a league-leading 19 assists in his final year with the Timbers. He began his professional career at Vasco da Gama in Brazil before moving to Danish side FC Midtjylland and then on to MLS.

Denkey arrived for even more. Cincinnati signed the Togo international striker from Belgian club Cercle Brugge for a fee north of $16 million, an MLS record at the time that beat the previous mark set by Atlanta United’s signing of Thiago Almada. Denkey had scored 27 goals to win the Golden Boot in Belgium’s top flight the season before his move, and the fee reflected the kind of finishing Cincinnati hoped would pair with Evander’s creativity.

Mboma Dem’s path to the first team looked nothing like his two attacking partners’. Cincinnati selected the French forward, who grew up in Mantes-la-Jolie outside Paris, in the second round of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft after a college career split between Dayton and Nebraska-Omaha, where he helped Dayton win an Atlantic 10 championship. He worked his way up through Cincinnati’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate before forcing his way into Noonan’s plans, and his emergence alongside two of the most expensive signings in club history has given the front three the kind of depth that lets Cincinnati absorb a Denkey injury or an Evander rest day without losing its attacking identity entirely. Mboma Dem’s rise carries an extra layer of soccer lineage: he is the son of Patrick Mboma, the former Cameroon international who won the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions and was named African Footballer of the Year that same season, a background that has drawn its own attention as the younger Mboma Dem forces his way into an MLS-record attacking line.

Cincinnati’s Defensive Problem

For all of Evander’s individual form, Cincinnati’s season has been defined by an uncomfortable trade-off. The club has traditionally been one of MLS’s most difficult teams to score against, but that reputation has taken a hit in 2026. Pat Noonan’s side have conceded the third-most goals in the league, 42 in their first 17 matches, even as an attacking trio of Evander, striker Kevin Denkey and rising French forward Kenji Mboma Dem has given them enough firepower to outscore plenty of opponents anyway.

Evander acknowledged the tension between the team’s attacking quality and its defensive lapses directly. “Of course we want the game to be a little bit more safe for us,” he said. “You want to win the games without all those crazy things happening during the game. It’s a moment where our offense has been working pretty well and defensively, not so much. But I think we’re going to adjust and get ourselves going again.”

That inconsistency has cost Cincinnati a place among the league’s top sides even with the talent in the squad. They have been through three separate winless runs this season that have kept them below where they would normally expect to sit, and they currently sit seventh in the Eastern Conference and 15th in the Supporters’ Shield standings, a modest return given the quality of their attacking options.

Leaning on the World Cup Break

Evander pointed to the nearly two-month World Cup pause as a chance for Cincinnati to reset rather than simply an interruption to the calendar. “We have been a little bit up and down during the season, and I think we needed to restart and reset a little bit, and get ourselves going again,” he said. He was also careful to push back against any sense of panic after the derby loss to Columbus. “Of course, when you lose a derby, you maybe think that the season is over, but it’s not. It’s not the end of the world, and we just need to keep going.”

Asked about the wider Eastern Conference standings, Evander struck the same measured tone. “I think the table is pretty mixed,” he said. “It’s not a big distance from where we are right now, and I think we can recover ourselves in a good spot.”

What a Win Over San Jose Would Mean

A victory at TQL Stadium would do more than snap Cincinnati’s mini-slump. It would hand the Eastern Conference side a scalp against one of the Western Conference’s form teams from earlier in the year, and it would give Noonan’s group a platform heading into the second half of a World Cup-compressed MLS calendar that offers little time to recover from a slow start. With Evander, Denkey and Mboma Dem all available and Evander himself in career-best scoring form, Cincinnati have the attacking tools to make good on his prediction that the club has “all the conditions to win the game.” Whether the defense that has conceded 42 goals in 17 matches can hold up its end will decide whether that prediction proves accurate.
