Ivan Toney charged with assault following alleged incident at London nightclub

England international Ivan Toney has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm following an alleged incident at a nightclub in central London.

The charge was issued on July 31 after an incident that allegedly took place on Wardour Street in Soho on Dec. 6.

Toney, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 24.

A spokesperson representing the striker confirmed that Toney intends to contest the allegation.

“Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court,” the spokesperson said.

The charge comes shortly after Toney returned from international duty with England at the FIFA World Cup.

The 30-year-old was included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad despite arriving at the tournament as an outside contender for selection.

Toney made two appearances during England’s campaign.

His only start came in England’s 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff, while his other appearance was as a late substitute during the 2-1 semifinal defeat to Argentina.

Neither Al-Ahli nor the Football Association has commented publicly on the charge.

Court proceedings are scheduled to begin later this month.
