Carragher Says Liverpool’s £123m Barcola Is Playing Worse Than Teenagers

Jamie Carragher - Carragher Criticises Arteta Over Kepa Selection in Carabao Cup Final
  • Jamie Carragher has questioned Liverpool’s recruitment after the 3-2 Champions League defeat at Fenerbahce, per Sky Sports.
  • He says teenagers Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha are playing better than Bradley Barcola, who cost £123m.
  • Carragher also points to the big contracts Liverpool gave Ryan Gravenberch and Szoboszlai this summer.

The Money Problem Behind Liverpool’s Night in Istanbul

Jamie Carragher has turned a defeat in Istanbul into a question about money. Speaking after Liverpool lost 3-2 at Fenerbahce in the Champions League on Wednesday night, he said the result tells supporters something about the way the squad has been built.

“It [defeat to Fenerbahce] reinforces to supporters that the squad Liverpool have got is very expensive, but not as good as it should be and not as balanced as it should be,” said Carragher.

His evidence is two teenagers. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha, he argues, are playing better than players Liverpool paid heavily to sign.

A Lead Thrown Away

Liverpool were 2-1 up with 20 minutes to play and still lost. Nyoni, 19, scored the opener and became the club’s second-youngest Champions League goalscorer. Alexander Isak hit the second. Barcola played up front and has now scored in just one of his 13 appearances for the club.

The goals Liverpool conceded were a separate failure. The wall for the first goal was well below par, and Jeremy Jacquet paid the price with the deflection. Marking and miscommunication led to the second. For the third, Muriqi drifted away from Virgil van Dijk, beat three static red shirts and headed past Alisson.

The ages tell their own story. The average age of the starting front three was less than 22, while the defence was just shy of 30. Ngumoha, whose Champions League record for Liverpool came last month, and Victor Munoz also had their moments against the Fenerbahce backline.

The Fee List Carragher Is Pointing At

The numbers back his argument. Liverpool’s 2025/26 recruitment included Isak at £125m, Florian Wirtz at £116m and Hugo Ekitike at £79m. This season’s arrivals are Barcola at £123m, Jacquet at £60m and Victor Munoz at £34.5m.

Carragher’s worry is that the cheaper options are overtaking the expensive ones. In his words:

“When you think of some of those players that have come in, what’s a little worry for not so much the manager, but the people who run the club… Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha were the best players for Liverpool, and they were a week or so ago against Chelsea.”

“But they also play in the position of players where Liverpool have spent big money.”

“Bradley Barcola has come in for £120m. He played up front tonight, didn’t play well, but the younger players are playing better than him.”

Contracts and a Crowded Midfield

Nyoni’s rise has a knock-on effect in midfield. By Carragher’s account Gravenberch was left out at the weekend for Nyoni, and Szoboszlai played in Istanbul without impressing. Both were given big contracts this summer. Carragher went on:

“And in Nyoni in midfield; Liverpool haven’t spent expensively on a player as such, but they’ve given big contracts this summer to Ryan Gravenberch – who was left out at the weekend for Nyoni – and Szoboszlai who played tonight and didn’t play particularly well.”

“You can imagine the type of figures they would be on and when a young player in midfield is playing ahead of them that causes a problem about where you’ve spent your money – and you basically haven’t spent your money well enough.”

Pressure on Iraola and the People Above Him

The verdict lands at an awkward moment for Andoni Iraola. The defeat at Fenerbahce came after the loss at Anfield, and Iraola now has back-to-back defeats for the first time in his time in charge. In October Iraola left Barcola on the bench alongside Wirtz and Isak against Villarreal.

Iraola was left frustrated by the goals in Istanbul, though he admitted the atmosphere made it hard for his players to communicate. Carragher aimed his point higher up, at the people who run the club, and Iraola had already defended Liverpool’s transfer window in September. Liverpool’s youngest players are the ones standing out, and the question Carragher has raised is whether the money went to the right places.
