  • Rio Ngumoha, 18 years and 52 days old, became the youngest Liverpool player to score or assist in the Champions League.
  • He set up two goals in the 4-3 win over Villarreal and made seven successful dribbles from eight attempts.
  • Talks over a new contract are continuing, with his current deal running until 2028.

Daniel Sturridge Says the Teenager Has Ability You Cannot Teach

Rio Ngumoha did not score against Villarreal, yet the chants of “Rio, Rio, Rio” rang around Anfield until he left the pitch in the 74th minute. The 18-year-old set up two goals in Liverpool’s 4-3 comeback win and became the youngest player in the club’s history to score or assist in the Champions League, aged 18 years and 52 days.

Uefa named him player of the match. Rio by Duran Duran played over the tannoy at the final whistle, and Alisson hugged him on the pitch. Afterwards Ngumoha told Amazon Prime the display was “up there with one of the best” he has played, and he said: “I enjoyed myself out there and the team helped me a lot.”

Ngumoha turned a two-goal deficit around

Liverpool trailed by two goals and played poorly for much of the first half, according to the BBC. Ngumoha was the one bright spot. Alexis Mac Allister pulled a goal back, then Ngumoha found space to dink a ball that Ronald Araujo met for the equaliser.

After the break he beat Sergi Cardona, held off Juan Foyth and set up Mac Allister for the lead. Florian Wirtz added a fourth goal. Head coach Andoni Iraola replaced Ngumoha with Bradley Barcola in the 74th minute.

The numbers back up the eye test. Ngumoha had 12 touches in the opposition box and completed seven of his eight dribbles, alongside his two assists. His own explanation of his approach was short. “Whenever I get the ball and there’s an opportunity to go one versus one, or two versus one, I believe in myself to do it,” he said. “I’ll just keep going and be ruthless.”

Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge, working for Amazon Prime, called the teenager “magnificent”. Sturridge said “this kid has so much potential”, and he picked up on the word ruthless from the post-match interview. “He wants to be decisive, and I love that,” he said.

A year of flashes and a switch to the right

The night capped a stop-start 12 months. Ngumoha burst on to the scene with a stoppage-time winner at Newcastle more than a year ago. He has moved in and out of the side after that, and he made his England debut earlier this season.

He grew up playing down the left, but minutes on that flank have been hard to find this season, with Cody Gakpo and Barcola often playing there. Iraola wants his wingers to play on both sides, and Ngumoha has taken to the right. After Liverpool beat Brentford on Saturday he said he had improved there, and that going away with England helped. “I like playing on both sides,” he said. “It gives me another tool in the toolbox.”

Iraola praised the teenager’s attitude and his endurance over more minutes, and he also pointed out that the work is not finished. Ngumoha is, in the coach’s words, “only 18 and still not the full package”. Iraola added: “There will be ups and downs in the process.”

Contract talks continue

Ngumoha signed his current deal in September 2025, weeks after his 17th birthday, and it runs until 2028. Talks over a new contract are continuing. The BBC reports the expectation is that he will sign on more lucrative terms now that he is 18, and Ngumoha said at the weekend that the negotiations are going well and sit with his agent.

For now the focus is on the pitch. Liverpool fans applauded him against Villarreal, and he recognised their backing. The BBC describes a fearless player whose raw ability to take a man on sets him apart in a game increasingly focused on structures.
