Arsenal Dealt Crushing Blow As Ben White Ruled Out Of Season
- Ben White will miss Arsenal’s final Premier League games and the Champions League final after suffering a significant knee injury.
- Sources told ESPN the defender is also expected to miss the World Cup, despite recently returning to England contention.
- Mikel Arteta now faces a major defensive problem with Jurriën Timber already unavailable.
There was a visible sense of concern when Ben White limped away at the London Stadium on Sunday. By Tuesday, Arsenal’s fears had hardened into confirmation.
The defender will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining what the club described as a “significant medial knee ligament injury,” ruling him out of Arsenal’s final two league matches and, most painfully of all, the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
For Mikel Arteta, it is a brutal setback at the worst possible moment.
White had quietly become one of Arsenal’s most dependable figures again during the run-in. His form over recent weeks reflected a player rediscovering rhythm after another season interrupted by fitness problems, and he started both legs of the Champions League semifinal victory over Atlético Madrid as well as the recent Premier League fixtures that have kept Arsenal on course for a first title since 2004.
Now he faces another long rehabilitation instead.
The 28-year-old was forced off during the first half of Arsenal’s tense 1-0 win over West Ham after damaging his knee in an awkward challenge. Martín Zubimendi replaced him after just 28 minutes, and there was immediate concern among Arsenal staff over the severity of the injury.
Subsequent specialist assessments confirmed those fears.
“Further to Sunday’s match at West Ham United, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that Ben White has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of this season,” Arsenal said in a statement.
The timing could hardly be worse for both club and player.
Sources told ESPN that White is also expected to miss the World Cup, a particularly cruel development given he had worked his way back into England consideration under Thomas Tuchel after a lengthy international absence.
White made his first England appearance since 2022 during March’s friendly against Uruguay and marked the occasion with a goal, prompting fresh optimism that he could yet become an important figure for his country again.
Instead, another serious injury threatens to halt that momentum completely.
There is also the wider issue for Arsenal. Arteta is already without first-choice right-back Jurriën Timber, leaving the manager increasingly stretched defensively at the most decisive stage of the campaign.
White’s value to this Arsenal side extends beyond his versatility. He brings calmness, reliability and an understanding of Arteta’s positional demands that few defenders in the squad replicate naturally. In big games, particularly in Europe, those details matter.
His absence will now force further reshuffling ahead of the Champions League final in Budapest against a Paris Saint-Germain side overflowing with attacking speed and movement.
For White personally, it continues an unfortunate pattern. Injuries have repeatedly disrupted his progress in recent years. He underwent knee surgery last season and has already missed large sections of this campaign because of hamstring problems.
When fit, he remains one of the Premier League’s most intelligent defenders, capable of drifting between centre-back and full-back roles with minimal fuss. But Arsenal will now have to navigate the biggest match of their season without him.
And for a player who had worked relentlessly to restore both fitness and international relevance, the disappointment will cut deeply.
