Chelsea Appoint Xabi Alonso as New Manager on Four-Year Deal

Chelsea have officially appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the club’s next long-term appointment.

The 44-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the west London side and will formally begin work on July 1 following the conclusion of the current season.

Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge after a difficult spell at Real Madrid, where he was dismissed in January less than six months into his tenure at the Bernabéu.

Despite that setback, Chelsea’s hierarchy identified the Spaniard as their preferred candidate after holding discussions with several potential options, including Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Fulham manager Marco Silva.

In a statement released by the club, Alonso spoke of his pride at taking charge of one of football’s biggest institutions.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

Chelsea’s latest managerial change comes after another unstable campaign that saw both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior depart within a matter of months.

Rosenior lasted only 106 days in the role before being dismissed last month, leaving interim coach Calum McFarlane to oversee the final weeks of the season.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final only increased pressure on the club to establish a clearer long-term direction.

Alonso now becomes the latest figure tasked with restoring Chelsea’s consistency and rebuilding the club into regular Champions League contenders after missing qualification in three of the last four seasons.

The Spaniard built his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the German side to an unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2024.

That achievement transformed him into one of the most sought-after managers in European football.

As a player, Alonso enjoyed an elite career with Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, winning major honours in England, Spain and Germany alongside World Cup and European Championship success with Spain.

Chelsea believe those experiences, combined with his coaching philosophy and leadership qualities, make him the ideal figure to lead the club’s next chapter.

“His appointment reflects the club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club,” Alonso added.

“Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

After years of instability on the touchline, Chelsea will now hope Alonso can finally provide the foundation for a more successful and sustainable future at Stamford Bridge.
