- Incident adds to growing concerns over discrimination in football
A 71-year-old fan has been arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match, Everton confirmed.
The arrest was made by Merseyside Police after supporters and stadium staff reported the alleged incident at the Hill Dickinson Stadium during Monday’s game.
“Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable,” Everton said in a statement.
Manchester City also welcomed the swift response from authorities, praising both the club and police for their action.
Semenyo, a Ghana international, has previously been the target of alleged racist abuse earlier this season while playing for AFC Bournemouth. That incident occurred during a match at Anfield, where a fan was removed from the stadium and is due to appear in court later this year.
City also revealed that defender Marc Guéhi was subjected to racist abuse online following Monday’s 3-3 draw.
“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game,” the club said.
The latest incident highlights the ongoing challenges football faces in tackling racism, with clubs and authorities reiterating a zero-tolerance approach.
