  • Coventry City midfielder Jack Rudoni dedicated his goal against Newcastle United to his grandmother, who had a heart attack the previous week and watched from hospital.
  • Rudoni scored the first penalty of his career, excluding shootouts, in his 280th appearance in all competitions, after telling his teammates the spot-kick was his.
  • Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 for their first home Premier League win in 25 years, and Frank Lampard told his players to “Enjoy the moment.”

A Penalty Taker Who Had Never Scored One

Jack Rudoni stepped up to take a penalty in the sixth minute at the CBS Arena on Monday night, and when it went in he celebrated for somebody who could not be there. The Coventry City midfielder dedicated the goal to his grandmother, who had a heart attack the week before and was watching from hospital.

“I just wanted to dedicate this to her where she’ll be watching from,” Rudoni said. He added that his grandmother is stable.

The goal was a first in more ways than one. It was the first penalty Rudoni has scored in his career, shootouts excluded, and it came in his 280th appearance in all competitions. He said he told his teammates the penalty was his.

The Moment That Opened the Night

The penalty arrived after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif in the box. Rudoni put it away, and Coventry led after six minutes of a game that would end 4-1.

Cherif was making his first Premier League start after fitness problems over the summer. Frank Lampard had spoken about his progression before the game. “He has shown his progression in terms of fitness, coming in after a difficult summer, and not training fully,” Lampard said.

Coventry had already won away at Nottingham Forest, so the Newcastle result made it back-to-back wins. Sky Sports reported that it moved them out of the relegation zone.

Cherif scored again in the 48th minute. Ellis Simms added a third in the 81st and Stephen Mfuni a fourth in the 86th, after Sven Botman had pulled one back for Newcastle with a long-range strike in the 70th minute.

Rudoni on What the Win Gives Coventry

The win brought a set of numbers the club had waited a long time to see. It was Coventry’s first home Premier League win in 25 years. Their last back-to-back top-flight wins came in March and April 2001, when they beat Derby 2-0 and Leicester 3-1. Their last top-flight game with four or more goals scored was a 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in 2000.

Rudoni talked about what that could build. The win gave the team confidence, he said, and they want to make their ground a “fortress.” He acknowledged the step up in quality: more second balls, more work in the final third. And he left the door open on the season: if Coventry keep up their intensity, “you never know where it could take you.”

Lampard Urges His Players to Stay Level

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle apologised to the visiting fans after the game, telling Sky Sports they “deserve a different result.” Lampard, at the other end of the evening, was happy with the performance. “We played like the team we want to be here,” he said. “But the work ethic from the team, the belief, then you get what you deserve, which is great finishes.”

He singled out two players. Lampard said Mfuni “is going to be a top player in every sense” and praised the “incredible maturity” the young player has shown. He also praised Cherif.

Then he put a hand on the brakes. Lampard told his side not to get overexcited and to “Enjoy the moment.” Sky Sports pointed out how much the finishing mattered: Coventry had scored once in their previous five Premier League games and had the worst shot conversion in the division, one goal from 51 shots, before Monday.

What Comes Next for Coventry

Coventry now sit out of the drop zone after a second win in a row, and their schedule gives them little time to settle. They travel to Tottenham Hotspur on 19 October, a 3pm kick-off.

Rudoni will make that trip after a goal he dedicated to someone else. His grandmother is stable and, in his words, was watching from hospital. He had waited 280 appearances to score a penalty.
