Manchester City Complete Record £86m Deal for Teenage Midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi

Manchester City have paid a Premier League record fee for a teenager to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi, completing an £86m move for the Lille midfielder that makes the 18-year-old the most expensive teenage signing in English top-flight history.

Sky Sports News reported City are paying a fixed fee of £81.3m plus £4.3m in add-ons for Bouaddi, who has signed a five-year contract running to the summer of 2031. The fee surpasses the £58.9m Manchester United paid Lille for Leny Yoro in 2024, the previous benchmark for a teenage transfer in the Premier League.

A midfield rebuilt from the ground up

The size of the fee reflects how much City are relying on Bouaddi to help fill a gap that has opened up through the middle of their team. City are working to rebuild their midfield after the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders, three players who between them shaped how the team played for years. Bouaddi arrives as the latest addition to that rebuild, joining a squad that already added Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the window.

Bouaddi’s rise this year has been built on his performances for Morocco at this summer’s World Cup, where he became one of the tournament’s breakout names. He stood out in a group-stage match against Brazil, going up against an experienced Brazilian midfield pairing of Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes.

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti described Bouaddi as “better in the duels” than his own midfield options that day, not the first time Ancelotti has rated an opposition player above one of his own in that way.

Bouaddi described his own game in terms that lean toward the defensive side of midfield rather than a box-to-box or attacking role. “I would say I am a player who plays for the team,” he said. “I am a really collective player. I try to put my team-mate in the best position and to give everything every time for the team.

“The most important aspect is to try to balance the team, help your team-mates. We know as a No 6 that you’re not going to score 20 goals in a season, well it can happen but it’s quite rare, so you know you have to balance the team and do everything for the team and do your job.”

Bouaddi did not hide his excitement at completing the move, describing City in the strongest possible terms as he put pen to paper on his new contract. “Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world,” he said. “It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player.

“I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game. I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners, this club feels like it’s built to win.

“The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.

“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that.”

Bouaddi closed his first comments as a City player by setting out exactly what he thinks the club expects from him. “This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title,” he said.

City’s view: “A huge talent who will thrive”

Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana explained why the club moved for a player who has barely established himself at senior level for club or country. “Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high, a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs,” Viana said.

“At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo. We have watched him very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City.

“We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”

Bouaddi joins a City squad managed by Enzo Maresca, who has spent the summer reshaping a midfield that carried the team through the club’s most successful period. Whether Bouaddi is ready to start immediately or needs time to adjust to the pace of the Premier League remains to be seen, but the size of the fee alone signals how highly City rate the role he could play over the next five years.

For Lille, the deal delivers a significant fee for a player they developed through their academy system, continuing a run of high-value sales that has helped fund the club’s recruitment in recent years.
