- Silva leaves after establishing Fulham as a stable Premier League club following promotion in 2022.
Marco Silva has announced his departure from Fulham after five years in charge, bringing to an end one of the most successful managerial spells in the club’s recent history as he edges closer to taking over at Benfica.
The 48-year-old’s contract was due to expire at the end of June and uncertainty over his future had lingered throughout the closing months of the season. Fulham were keen to retain Silva and had offered him a new three-year contract, but the Portuguese coach has now confirmed he will leave Craven Cottage.
Silva departs having transformed Fulham’s fortunes since arriving in 2021. Appointed while the club were in the Championship, he guided the Cottagers back to the Premier League at the first attempt before establishing them as a competitive top-flight side.
Fulham secured an 11th-place finish this season after ending the campaign with victory over Newcastle United. Under Silva, the club also finished 10th and 13th in previous Premier League campaigns, achievements that reflected the steady progress made during his tenure.
In an open letter to supporters, Silva thanked Fulham fans for their backing throughout his time in west London.
“After five years, our journey together comes to an end,” Silva said.
“To our fans, I asked you, from day one, to always be with us. And that’s what you did these past five years. We achieved a lot together.
“My staff and I always felt your support. It will never be forgotten. Fulham will always be in my heart, and sooner or later I will be back at Craven Cottage.”
Silva arrived at Fulham with significant Premier League experience after previous spells at Hull City, Watford and Everton. While his earlier jobs brought mixed fortunes, he found stability and success at Craven Cottage, building a squad capable of competing comfortably in England’s top division.
Fulham owner Shahid Khan paid tribute to Silva’s contribution while insisting the club are prepared for the next chapter.
“Marco and Fulham were an excellent fit,” Khan said.
“Change is inevitable in this game, and we’ve accordingly prepared for this moment.
“The talent in our squad, our historic home ground of Craven Cottage, our faithful supporters, and my commitment to backing the club, all make Fulham an extraordinarily attractive destination for an incoming head coach.
“We will soon appoint a new leader in a timely but deliberate manner, who will meet the standards of our club and expectations of our fans throughout the world.”
Attention now turns to Silva’s next destination. Discussions with Benfica have accelerated in recent days and sources indicate an agreement is within reach.
The Portuguese giants are searching for a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who recently left Benfica to become Real Madrid head coach on a three-year contract.
For Fulham supporters, Silva leaves with considerable credit in the bank. He inherited a club seeking stability after another promotion and leaves having built a team capable of holding its own in the Premier League. While Benfica appears set to offer the next challenge in his career, his impact at Craven Cottage has ensured he will be remembered as one of the club’s most influential modern managers.
