Michael Carrick confirmed as Manchester United head coach on permanent deal
- Michael Carrick signs permanent Manchester United contract until 2028
- Former midfielder rewarded after guiding club into Champions League qualification
- United working to retain Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate as assistants
Michael Carrick has been confirmed as the permanent head coach of Manchester United FC after signing a two-year contract with the option of an additional season.
United announced on Friday that the 44-year-old has agreed a deal running until 2028 as reward for the impressive turnaround he has overseen since taking charge earlier this year.
Carrick initially stepped in on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January, but quickly emerged as the leading candidate to take the role permanently after stabilising the club’s season and securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.
The former England midfielder has won 11 of his 16 matches in charge, restoring confidence and structure to a side that had drifted badly during the first half of the campaign.
Carrick’s calm presence and familiarity with the club have resonated strongly with supporters at Old Trafford, where he remains one of the most respected figures of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
United’s hierarchy have been encouraged not only by results, but by the team’s improved performances and the development of younger players during Carrick’s spell in charge.
Sources told ESPN that negotiations between the club and Carrick progressed smoothly, with the final delay in announcing the appointment relating primarily to discussions over his backroom staff.
United are now finalising agreements to keep assistants Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate as part of Carrick’s coaching setup moving forward.
Carrick spent 12 years as a player at Manchester United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League, before moving into coaching following his retirement.
His appointment marks another significant shift in United’s long-term rebuild as the club attempt to re-establish themselves among Europe’s elite after several turbulent seasons.
